Coach - Corina Barnes

My name is Corina, and I'm a movement enthusiast- weightlifting, barre, yoga, dance, pilates, etc. With a background in Filipino dancing from 8 years old to present, intensive dance training in my early 20s, and committing to my health after my first baby, I decided to combine my passion in movements into RevBarre.

As a full time mom of two boys, sometimes a cookie decorator, I have to define my own balance and make myself a priority. Since stepping into Revolution Gym two years ago, the mindset imparted in me has given me confidence in my abilities to train others. With RevBarre, you'll get mixed elements of dance, Pilates, yoga, and functional training to tone, strengthen, stretch. Let's move to music together.

Throughout my life I’ve always been active in sports. I was a 4 sport athlete during my high school years. I continued an athletic career in college where I was a 4 year starter on the football team.

During college I accomplished numerous athletic goals including All-Conference selection, All-Region, All-American, and team captain honors.

When I got out of college I could feel something was missing, that something wasn’t right. It’s a weird transition from being an athlete to normal everyday life, and I wasn’t handling it well. I bounced around different club sports, dabbling in rugby for a few years. But everything seemed either too easy, or others weren’t taking training as serious as I did, and I would quickly grow frustrated.

By luck I stumbled upon Revolution/Fight University and John’s system of training.  I instantly fell in love with the place.  I began training martial arts as way to keep my cardio up. It quickly fed my competitive side, but also gave me the team camaraderie I had in football. Besides preparing for my own fights, I’ve helped other fighters with their own training camps, cornered my teammates in their fights, and worked my way up to assisting in John's system.

The intensity of the workouts and the mentality of the people that train here is unlike anyplace else.  Since I started training here I’ve learned to be comfortable in the uncomfortable. To not only know how to survive in deep water but to also crave the deep water.

I've been training with John 10 years now, and it’s still just as tough, as challenging, and as fun as it was on day 1.

I found what was missing.

Born and raised in Kansas City, MO, my connection to RevGym actually started back in 1995, when I first started Martial Arts at the age of 6.  At a studio next door to a laundromat in a little shopping center in Raytown, MO, the school was run by a young John Brown and his former Grandmaster. While there, I learned a lot about discipline, perseverance, and integrity, all while practicing martial arts and learning how to punch a bag until your fists bled. After a few years, John had parted ways with the school, and we left there shortly after, joining a different fairly well known martial arts school. It was fine at the time, but after about a year of feeling like I just wasn't getting enough out of it, to the point of boredom, I felt like I couldn't stay there much longer.

So when we heard John was opening his own studio, we immediately enrolled. It was a small 200 sf space in an industrial area of the West Bottoms. The training area was not much more than some floor mats, mirrors, and a maintenance closet that doubled as a changing room. But despite all that, I still learned and progressed more there than I ever did at any fancy school. Even going on to medal in a number of local and national tournaments under his training.

Eventually outgrowing that space as more people joined, we moved into the Ranchmart shopping center in Leawood, KS, where it transformed from a small martial arts studio to much of the full service training facility it is today. I continued training there throughout high school, assisting in teaching the younger martial arts students, and training John's fighters until I left for college at KSU in 2009 and then for California after graduating. Upon returning to Kansas City in 2017, I wouldn't say I was in the best shape, physically or mentally, but I knew, after almost 10 years of feeling sedentary and complacent, there was only one guy I could entrust to get me back on the path.

Fast forward to today, and I’m still here. Not because of the amount of time I’ve spent, but because of the culture that’s been built up that seeks to inspire, encourage, and nurture each individual’s drive to better themselves. Now, as part of the training team, I hope to pass on what I’ve learned here, so that others may have the chance to experience and enjoy everything that RevGym has to offer.

I’ve been a life long resident of Kansas City, and participated in soccer, football and basketball growing up. After being married, raising two kids and working full-time, I decided to change my life and health through martial arts.  I started training with John  in 2003.  After years of training, I earned my black belt. I then looked for a challenge beyond the normal tournament circuit and took on the challenge of Mixed Martial Arts. I then trained under John to become a personal trainer and assistant instructor of REV’s martial arts programs.
