REVGYM & FIGHT-U WEEK OF 07.08.24
REVGYM & FIGHT UNIVERSITY TRIBE -
“BELIEVE”
In the past, I have not been one to share shortcomings or pain… shut off, cold, distant, stoic… trying to grow away from that a bit by sharing.
I come from a place where belief was all I really had. I hadn’t learned faith as a child, just forced into church with no explanation or real education around faith. (Thank God that has changed!). So as a kid, just belief. And pretty much only in myself. Those close to me, my family, were only interested in “seeing” me if I achieved… good grades, athletic achievement, looked the part of whatever activity or place we were… otherwise, there was hell to pay.
My mom & dad divorced when I was 3… we were the only “broken” home in the neighborhood. Mom remarried to an abusive alcoholic just shy of me turning 8. My mom and I moved in & out of the house 3 times within the first year, then in and out several more times into my Jr High and High school years. So “home” was only where I happened to be at the time.
I, as a young boy, the runt and youngest in my neighborhood, for a period of almost 4 years, was singled out to be the target of attempted molestation by several older boys in the neighborhood. I was literally alone in this; too much shame and fear to tell anyone. Wanted to be a part of “the gang”, and wanted to be seen. So I didn’t tell or confide in anyone. So to cope, I started doing unusual things… I ran, a lot. I didn’t know how that lone activity was probably keeping me sane. I started competing seriously in track and field at the age of 6. I also started martial arts training at a very young age of 6. Then basketball, baseball, soccer, wrestling… I had this belief that I was meant for more… definitely more than what was going on. I admired world champions of all kinds. Gravitated to shows about underdogs, superheroes, the “good guys”. Couldn’t stand bullies or bad guys. Probably why I do a lot of what I do now.
My father had this ability to show me my own grit. No matter the activity, throwing a ball, running a race, fighting… his comments were short in accolades, but big in question. In general they would be around “You won, can you do better?”. Not ever in a “you’re not good enough” tone or condemnation, more of a “you can find another level”. So in all endeavors (those that paid off in gold), I sought not just excellence, but elitism. I learned to “lean in” early… not only did it pay off in the arena.. but burned away at the anxiety and fears of my home life. I suppose I thought or felt there would be more accolades from my dad if I won it all… so I did, but I was not any “closer” to my father.
I found the elitist level in many things. Being a part of athletic teams and individual sports that won state, regional, and national championships was spectacular… but winning international championships and world titles, solo, mono-a-mono, was the thing.
I still believed I was meant for more… the podium and gold medals weren’t completing me, my beliefs, my destiny or legacy. Only when I started seeing my teaching, mentoring, and leading of others paying off in their lives, did I begin to understand the beliefs I had in myself were ultimately meant for others.
Many didn’t make it out of my home town, and many that did took the demons with them… as I did. It will be a lifetime of work for me.
I have belief and hope that I can give some glimpse of hope, belief, and education to all of you through not only the avenues of athleticism, martial arts, self defense, and combatives that I share with you, but the grit, discipline, and drive it will take to do the extraordinary things YOU ARE MEANT FOR!
When I speak to leaning in, embracing the suck, it’s not because I don’t think or feel that you :”get it”… It’s because I know you can. I got it… and I wasn’t destined to make it out alive.
We’ve got this, together!
With all of the belief and faith in the world, nothing will come to pass without the work.
If you believe it, you can only achieve it with the extraordinary work it will take to get there.
So I challenge you to sit down with pen and paper and write out 5 things you believe about yourself. Then 3 things that you believe you will accomplish in this life… things that are truly “stretchy” for you, uncomfortable, maybe seem impossible, but you feel them in your heart.
Then let’s get to work on the work!
Believe Tribe… BELIEVE!!!
